What is a bike bus?

A bike bus is a group of cyclists who travel together, similar to a bus, with adults in the front and back to support. Bike buses are also known as bike trains, cycle trains, or bicibus. They have a set route, schedule, and meeting points for participants to join along the way.

Bike buses can offer many advantages, including:

  • Safety: Cyclists are more visible to drivers, which can help prevent aggressive driving. Newer and less confident riders benefit from the knowledge of experienced riders.
  • Community: Bike buses can create a sense of community and allow children to have fun with friends. Music, smiles, and laughter are common features of bike buses. Starting at cell phones is not. Older kids get to demonstrate leadership.
  • Environment: Bike buses are more eco-friendly than driving, and can reduce noise and air pollution.
  • Health: Bike buses are a great way for kids to get fresh air. Time outside, light exercise, and getting to school under their own power creates numerous benefits for kids' physical health, mental health, academic performance, and social/emotional development.
  • Convenience: Parents can join to get their child comfortable, but can share the work of getting their kids to and from school on a regular basis. Like a carpool or bus stop, but with all the benefits above.

Portland's bike bus has a great YouTube presence, check out the video below to get inspired:

Mount Daniel and Jessie Thackrey: No

Due to the age of these students and the routes leading to the schools (e.g., the Mount Daniel hill) we are not doing bike buses. Bike Falls Church is excited that Mount Daniel has applied for a grant to teach 1st graders how to ride bikes (like DC, Arlington, and Alexandria do).
